Students well looked after in wake of school closures

OTTAWA, October 19, 2015 – Languages Canada’s Quality Assurance Framework protected investments made by students in the wake of school closures at PGIC Victoria, Cornerstone Academic College (Vancouver) and KGIC Halifax.

PGIC Victoria and Cornerstone Academic College in Vancouver closed September 25th while KGIC Halifax closed on October 2nd, affecting approximately 130 students. Since these programs are members of Languages Canada, student investment is protected under the Education and Completion Assurance Plan (eCAP TM). The association has been following the situation to ensure all students attending the programs are looked after and are able to complete their paid studies. As usual, the appropriate governmental bodies have been kept informed and where necessary have been consulted.

“While this is an unfortunate occurrence, it demonstrates the value of a student protection framework. The question is not if but when students will suffer from program interruptions, be it through a closure or other unfortunate situation. Being prepared to support students is the responsible and caring thing to do, and we are proud that in all our years of existence not a single student has lost their investment when attending a Languages Canada member program,” says Gonzalo Peralta, Executive Director of Languages Canada.

The Loyalist Group is the holding company for the schools. Although the Loyalist Group is not a member of Languages Canada, the schools in mention are members and, as such, are obliged to meet all membership criteria at all times and are fully covered by the Languages Canada Quality Assurance Framework. In other words, they are responsible for meeting accreditation and other membership obligations and their students, in turn, are fully protected.

“The closures of these schools were orderly,” says Linda Auzins, Director of Member Services at Languages Canada. “Management of the schools has taken the necessary steps to ensure the students were looked after by placing them at other school locations, transferring them to another accredited program or providing a refund, and have worked closely with Languages Canada as we manage the transition for the students and keep a close eye on financial and other developments.”

Languages Canada Quality Assurance Framework protects the investments made by international students and upholds Canada’s reputation as a quality study destination.
