Languages Canada Announces World Student Day from Coast to Coast

To celebrate international language students in Canada and recognize their valuable contribution to our education, culture, and economy, Languages Canada and its member programs will host the inaugural World Student Day on Friday, August 8th, 2014.  Member programs from coast to coast are planning a variety of events to celebrate our guests in Canada.

Joint organized activities will take place in Halifax, Glace Bay, Charlottetown, Montreal, London, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria with each city creating its own original events with the common goal of raising the awareness of international students and the cultural and economic benefits they bring to their respective destination.

Languages Canada 212 members hosted over 130,000 international students who studied English or French in 2013.  These students come from around the world (the top five source countries are Japan, Brazil, China, South Korea and Saudi Arabia) and contributed $1.4 Billion to the Canadian economy in 2013 in tuition, living, and tourism expenses.  Approximately 30% of them continue studying in post-secondary programs in Canadian colleges and universities once they have completed their language studies, contributing a further $1.5 Billion per year to Canada’s education exports revenues.

Canada’s International Education Strategy, launched in January 2014 by the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, notes that “international education is at the very heart of our current and future prosperity.”  Join us on August 8th to celebrate the first Languages Canada World Student Day!
