OTTAWA, ON – May 21, 2015 – Languages Canada and the Ministry of Education of Brazil are pleased to announce Acadia University (Nova Scotia), Apex Language and Career Center (Halifax) and the International Education Centre and Language Institute at Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology (Ottawa) as the host institutions for Brazilian scholarship students Olivia Maria Santos de Lima and Miller Eliézer Cunha.
Last December, Languages Canada participated in the inaugural Languages Without Borders Congress in Brasilia, Brazil, where the top prize in a national student competition from 46 Brazilian federal universities was awarded as part of the Ministry of Education of Brazil’s English Without Borders program. Olivia Maria Santos de Lima and Miller Eliézer Cunha e Silva, from the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia English second language education program, were chosen as finalists.
The four-week scholarship offers participating institutions an excellent opportunity to connect with the English Without Borders program in Brazil, to gain visibility with the Universidade de Uberlândia and the Ministry of Education, to build relationships with future English faculty members in Brazil, and to learn more about the unique needs and workings of Brazilian universities.
"We trust that initiatives such as this one will contribute to the development of our sector by showing the high quality of Canadian English language education, as well as the rich cultural and social events Canada has to offer. It will help Languages Canada and hosting institutions gain visibility and credibility with the English Without Borders program in Brazil and, ultimately, foster further educational relationships,” says Sharon Churchill Roe, Manager, English Language Programs Acadia Centre for International Languages, the institution hosting Olivia Santos de Lima.
The scholarship offers these students the opportunity to enhance their learning and research through exposure to Canadian English language education and culture. All costs including educational material, food and travel-related expenses are covered by Languages Canada and participating institutions.
"As we have been – and hope to continue – working with students from Brazil through the Science Without Borders program, it is important for our ESL teachers to get a better understanding of the needs and the language learning background of these students. Hosting Mr. Silva, who has teaching experience in Brazil, provides an invaluable opportunity for Algonquin College ESL teachers to learn first-hand about the teaching approaches that have proven successful with this particular student demographic,” says Ernest Mulvey, Director of the International Education Centre at Algonquin College.
The association is proud to offer these students the opportunity to further their learning and research in these three exceptional locations through programs designed to meet their individual goals and interests in language education.
Languages Canada is a not-for-profit association representing more than 220 private and public language education members across Canada that offer accredited English and French programs.
