Languages Canada, CAPS-I and the State of Pará, Brazil, sign notable MOU
OTTAWA, ON – March 13, 2015 – The State of Pará, Brazil, the Canadian Association of Public Schools (CAPS-I) and Languages Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last week to support closer working relations between the three parties.
Promoting the mutual assistance of English language education, cultural exchange and public school management, are among the objectives of the MOU. Signatories included: Helenilson Cunha Pontes, Secretary of State for Education for the State of Pará, Brazil; Bonnie McKie, Executive Director, Canadian Association of Public Schools - International (CAPS-I); and Gonzalo Peralta, Executive Director, Languages Canada.
“I am very pleased that CAPS-I is part of this important collaboration with the State of Pará. Canadian public schools are becoming increasingly connected throughout the globe and this MOU will serve to strengthen educational ties and knowledge transfer within Brazil," noted Ms. McKie. The agreement will allow for sharing of academic, cultural and technical knowledge among students, teachers and education practitioners, as well as for leadership management exchange and the development of English language education in Brazilian public schools.
"We are pleased to partner with CAPS-I to support the State of Pará, Brazil, in their language education efforts," said Mr. Peralta, adding “the State of Pará's investment in language education is impressive and reflects a vision that will position them so favourably in the future. We are proud to be part of this initiative.”
Brazil, an essential partner for Canada in all facets of international cooperation, is a priority partner for Canada’s International Education Strategy with the end goal of doubling the number of international students in Canada by 2022. Languages Canada members receive more than 18,000 Brazilian students a year.
Languages Canada is the not-for-profit association that represents more than 227 language education member programs across Canada, which offer accredited English and French programs from both the public and private sectors.
The Canadian Association of Public Schools – International (CAPS-I) is a not-for-profit association that represents the 112 publicly-funded school districts/boards offering international student programs for various grade levels, ranging from elementary school through to high school graduation across all provinces in Canada.
